By Kate DevlinMedical Correspondent. In the first study claiming to conclusively rank the health risks associated with the different types of contraceptive pill, researchers found that some raised the chances of developing clots like deep vein thrombosis DVT by twice as much as others. While all types of the oral contraceptive increase the risk of a clot, some combinations of hormones are worse than others.
Oral contraceptive pills are hormonal preparations taken for several reasons. The primary purpose of hormonal contraceptives is as the name suggests, to prevent pregnancy. They are however used for the treatment of other conditions such as endometriosis and to regulate menstruation caused by dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Health experts say clinicians are sticking to "old favourites" of brands of contraceptive Pills, which are cheaper to prescribe than "designer" Pills. The Family Planning Association FPA says that, as a result, many women are forced to put up with painful periods, water retention and problem skin because their contraception is not being tailored to alleviate these symptoms, which in some cases could be helped by new style Pills. STOCKHOLM — Women taking birth-control pills are more likely to report they feel poorly overall and have a reduced sense of well-being after starting the synthetic hormones, according to a new study from Swedish researchers. The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, published in the journal Fertility and Sterilityrandomized the women into two groups: received a contraceptive pill containing enthinylestradiol and levonorgestrel for three months; received a placebo. Both groups of women and the study leaders were unaware of which pills the women were taking, and all the women were instructed to use non-hormonal contraceptives.
