Seattle Pride is one of the oldest of its kind in the USA, and has been coloring the city streets each summer since The event is free and open to the public - no tickets are required hurrah! You can expect a fun, colorful procession of floats and music, winding its way through the city streets.
This was the first event in the region in which the gay community as a whole came out of its collective closet. The week started off Monday evening, June 25 with an Open House and discussion sponsored by the Stonewall Recovery Center, a drug treatment program. June 26 was a discussion on transsexuality at the University of Washington Hub Ballroom.

While raids on gay bars were carried out with some regularity, the Stonewall incident sparked several days of protests in the surrounding neighborhood. The uprising is regarded as the start of the gay rights movement to reverse the harassment and criminalization of the lesbian and gay community. In the U. Inthe site was established as the Stonewall National Park Monumentwhich included the Stonewall Inn, nearby Christopher Park, and the surrounding streets and sidewalks in Greenwich Village where the protests occurred.

The early events were explicit civil rights protests in defense of sexual freedom, and couldn't have come at a more crucial time. Since then Seattle Pride has never quite lost touch with its activist roots, even as it turned into a month of events and parties that ends with a parade through Downtown. A parade which draws in excess ofpeople and has become a joyous, rainbow-hued symbol of both inclusion and the start of summer.
